They have been declared a natural Landmark by the Bulgarian government and are a major tourist attraction in the region.

Founded in the 30th years of 10th century on the place of the Old Anchoress in Rila Mountain, the Rila Monastery is located in 1147 meters altitude in the middle of the fragrant coniferous forests of Rila Mountain. The complex has a unique architecture, consisting of a main church, monastic cells, a medieval church and famous Hrelio's tower.
